Concerned about the health and environment issues created by the absence of public toilets in most Nigerian cities, Isaac started the first mobile toilet initiative in Nigeria to provide decent toilet facilities in strategic locations across the country. Improper disposal of human waste contributes to the heavily polluted waterways, rivers, and seas in and around Nigeria. Since most Nigerians rely directly on unfiltered water from these sources for their cooking, drinking, and washing, the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, and cholera is widespread and dangerous. Besides improving sanitation and public health, Mr. Durojaiye uses the toilets to create jobs: most are given to street gang leaders who are now going off crimes and widows, who in this society are often resource-less. Their job is to manage the toilets located in bus terminals and markets --clean them and collect the money.
THE CHIKUKWA PROJECT is a feel good story out of Africa. For the last 20 years an incredible permaculture project has been growing in Zimbabwe. Where once the people of the Chikukwa villages suffered hunger, malnutrition and high rates of disease, this community has turned its fortunes around using permaculture farming techniques. Complementing these strategies for food security, they have built their community strength through locally controlled and initiated programs for permaculture training, conflict resolution, women’s empowerment, primary education and HIV management. Now they have a surplus of food and the people in these villages are healthy and proud of their achievements. Their degraded landscape has been turned into a lush paradise.
These are some scenes of a film which is seeking postproduction fundning. It's about this amazing permaculture project in Zimbabwe which has transformed the lives of 7,000 Shona Africans living in Chikukwa. When completed this film will be an amazing educational tool about sustainable faming and permaculture which will help save many from hunger and malnutrition, in Africa and in the world.
One Acre Fund has pioneered a method for smallholder farmers in Africa to double their farm income per acre.
It’s based on credit, not charity. When a farmer enrols with One Acre Fund, she joins as part of a group of six to twelve farmers. She receives an in-kind loan – guaranteed by her fellow group members - of seed and fertilizer. A field officer provides comprehensive in-field agriculture training. At the end of the season, the officer trains her on how to harvest and store her crop, and participate more competitively in harvest markets
One Acre Fund currently now serves over 75,000 farmers in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi
Nobel Peace laureate Leymah Gbowee helped organise and then lead the Liberian Mass Action for Peace, a coalition of Christian and Muslim women who sat in public protest, confronting Liberia's ruthless president and rebel warlords, and even held a sex strike. Amid the shells and bullets, they prayed and protested , demanding that the conflict between former President Charles Taylor and rebel forces stop.
Her strength was evident in 2003 when she led hundreds of women to the capital, Monrovia, demanding an end to the war. "We the women of Liberia will no more allow ourselves to be raped, abused, misused, maimed and killed. " The protests helped to push Mr Taylor - who is now on trial at The Hague on war crimes charges - out of power and end the conflict.
Born to a tribal minority family in Cambodia, Somaly Mam began life in extreme poverty. With limited options as a severely marginalized ethnic group, and living in unimaginable despair, her family often resorted to desperate means to survive. This confluence of dire circumstances led to the unspeakable horrors that would mark Somaly's early years. Somaly was sold into sexual slavery by a man who posed as her grandfather. To this day, due to the passing of time and the unreliability of a wounded memory, Somaly still does not know who this man was to her. Yet his actions set her on an unimaginable path fraught with danger, desperation, and ultimately triumph.
In 2007 Somaly Mam founded a foundation that is dedicated to ending sex slavery around the world. The Somaly Mam Foundation supports programs that rescue victims and provide survivors with food, shelter, medical and psychological care. These programs have provided comprehensive services to thousands of sex trafficking victims across Southeast Asia since their inception
